Amazon has releast a new HTML5 Kindle app for Chrome and Safari. Now you don’t have to buy a Kindle reader or get eye-strain reading on your phone. You can read books right inside your web browser on your computer. Amazon maked this web application to get around Apple’s wanting a huge percentage of their Kindle book sales when purchased from an iPad app. Amazon wasn’t having it so they made us this great web app to get around that requirement. Chromebooks Coming

The new notebook computers with the Chrome OS will be available for purchase June 15th. Last year we started talking about the new toy that Google was giving away the CR48 notebook computer. It looked pretty much like a regular computer but when you took a closer look you found it only have one program. That’s right the only program was the Chrome web browser. The concept was, to do everything on the cloud. Now being called ChromeBooks they are being manufactured. They’re going to be sold by Amazon and BestBuy starting June 15th but to all other consumer outlets soon. The computers are being manufactured by Samsung and Acer for now.

I like this concept since nearly everything I do is on the web but I’ve talked to lots of people who don’t like the idea of paying full price for less. The lower end laptops and the netbooks can be used while not connected to the web. The Chrombooks are the same price as these computers. I and some Google/web 2.0 enthusiast like myself will buy them. Some consumers will buy them because they are bigger than netbooks. They’ll take them home and return them the next day after finding it’s not a full computer.

I’ll let you know what I think after I get one.

Firefox 4 vs Chrome

I’ve been using Firefox 4 for about a week and I have found it to be fast and reliable not unlike Google’s Chrome browser. What I’ve found is that the plugins for Firefox are much better. I’m not sure what the problem is but Google needs to work very hard with app developers to get quality plugins or FF4 is going to take back it’s market-share. There are some apps that are not rewritten for FF4 but developers always catch up.

Firefox now has browser-sync like Chrome but I think it’s more secure than Chrome’s. The “App Tab’s” feature is a great also. Features

There is a lot to like about Firefox 4.

Google Sync Makes Chrome Shine

I’ve been using Google Chrome for my primary browser for about two weeks and I’ve got to say I’m digging it! The speed is great and it’s very clean but just the past two day days I found where it really shines.

Google Browser Sync extends all of your extensions, bookmarks and settings to all of the Chrome browsers on all of your computers. I was trying a new Linux on my laptop. The default browser for the distro was Chrome (actually the open-source version Chromium). I opened the browser, clicked “customize and control” and Options. I clicked on the “Personal Stuff” tab and “Synchronize”. It ask for a user name and password. I entered them and Wa La the browser is setup just as it is on my desktop.

This and many other features make Chrome my favorite browser for now.

Moving To Chrome

So, I’ve been trying to move to Google Chrome as my default web-browser at least until Firefox 4 comes out. I had one issue preventing me from doing it. For years I’ve used a Delicious plugin to manage my bookmarks. The official Delicious plugin for Firefox is terrific but the of official delicious plugin for Chrome is terrible. I tried for a while using Chrome Sync. This worked fine but there was still no Delicious integration. I am totally invested in Delicious.

Just minute ago I found a Chrome extension called Chromicious. It is not an official Delicious extension but I works very well. It’s maybe better then the official plugin for Firefox! I am so happy! I don’t think I could have switched without it.

Now that I’ve figured that out I will delve into Chrome. Look under the hood and really figure out all the features.

Google Makes Computers Disposable

By now you’ve heard about the Google Chrome notebook. I thought it sounded intriguing and quickly went to their site to check it out. It would be nice to have a notebook that is lite, starts quickly and has great battery life. I tried a dell net-book the Mini 10. I didn’t like it at all so I returned it. Unlike the Mini 10 the Chrome notebook has a SSD (Solid State Drive) so it is much fast then netbooks with spinning harddrives. It has the Chrome OS not Windows so there’s no need for anti-virus software. Your saving all of your data to the cloud so if your computer is lost, stolen or destroyed you still have all of your data. Because you need to be on the Internet to use this thing (actually not true due to offline mode for Google apps and some other sites) Google has made sure your connected with WiFi of course but also they’re giving you 3G wireless. 100 megabytes free each month from Verizon Wireless for two years. 100MB is good enough to work on Google Docs every morning on the bus as long as your not taking YouTube breaks.

I’d like to try what Google is proposing, doing everything in the cloud. Hell I almost do it now. It would be a great experiment!

Firefox 4 Coming Soon

Firefox 4 Beta is now available for download and the product is scheduled for release early this Fall. It promises to have lots of great new features including…

new tab location. On the top like Chrome.
a new easier to use add-ons manager.
support for the new HTML5 standard.
Crash Protection. When a application (Flash, Quicktime or Silverlight crashes in your browser it wont effect the rest of Firefox.

There will be many more features to come soon.

I started to use Google Chrome because it’s clean and fast but I missed how well the extensions worked in Firefox. All of the extensions for Chrome are crude and not implemented well. Now Firefox 4 will have many of the same features as Chrome and still have those great extensions. Developers really need to bring it with the extensions for Chome.
