Yes there is a free video editor. Lightworks beta is not just free but it is full featured. It has been used on such films as the Oscar-winning film The King’s Speech and the critically acclaimed Hanna.

At the NAB Show in April 2010 EditShare owner of Lightworks announced they plan to transform Lightworks into Lightworks Open Source and in November 2010 released the a free downloadable version of that software.

The software is currently for Windows only but in late November 2011 will have both Mac and Linux versions. There is no reason to purchase expensive photo editing software like Adobe Premier or Final Cut.

Edit Video Online

JayCut is a an online video editor. You may ask, “Why would you use an online video editor?” The answer is for power. I have a relatively slow computer. Editing video does not require a powerful machine but rendering the video after editing requires an awful lot of computer (both CPU and RAM). My machine is a single-core AMD Sempron 1.8 GHz with 2 gigs of RAM. Not bad for what I normally use it for (Web Apps, media playback, Photoshop and Lightroom) but it really chokes when rendering video. That’s where JayCut comes in. You upload your video, edit it using there drag and drop interface then render and download to your computer, mobile device or upload it to YouTube. Use Jaycut to do the work.

Of course JayCut is not Finalcut but it is easy, works very well and it’s free!

The Rest of Everest Podcast

“The Rest of Everest” is video cast shot mostly in Tibet by Jon Miller. The podcast started out with footage from the 2003 filming of the documentary “Everest The Other Side”. The podcast has gotten so popular This podcast is not about climbing is about experience of being on the mountian the Tibetan culture and the hard work it takes to get these people up the mountain. Watch this, it’s one of my favorites.

PhotoShop User TV

If I was to start over again with graphics software I would not be using Photoshop. It is far to expensive. Hundreds of dollars! I would use the GIMP now. But I got a good deal on Photoshop CS1 a few years ago and watched Photoshop TV now Photoshop User TV. Unless you plan to use CS2 or CS3 I would not bother because these guys are all about promoting the latest product.

TWIT On YouTube

Yes they have the flagship show “TWIT“, “Windows Weekly“, “MacBreak Weekly” and “This Week In Google” (more to come later) are all on the new TWIT YouTube channel. Meet The GIMP

The GIMP (Gnu Image Manipulation Program) is a free and opensource graphic editing program not unlike Adobe PhotoShop.

The GIMP like PhotoShop can be very difficult to learn. “Meet The GIMP” is a video podcast of GIMP tutorials or lessons. MTG will walk you through the basics of using The GIMP.

I posted about MTG I while back after that I there was a pause and I thought he went off air but he has been posting regularly. Losts of new episodes!
