This weekend I tried Teamviewer a free remote access program. There are other remote access programs and some even work better than Teamviewer but the two best things about Teamviewer is it works cross-platform (Windows, Mac, Linux and many mobile devices) and Teamviewer is free. Like all remote access, controlling the remote computer is a little slow. Teamviewer works like a charm. I thought I had a problem connecting two Linux computers but I adjusted the screen resolution and it worked great. I’ve tried it on Windows 7, Windows XP, Linux Mint, and my Nexus One Android phone and they all worded great. I would say Teamviewer is an awesome free tool but it’s better than that. Teamviewer is an awesome tool!

Everything On The Web

Google has just announced the new Chromebooks to being made by Samsung and Acer. They’ll be sold by Amazon and Best Buy beginning June 15th.

The idea behind these computers is everything on the web. Use Gmail instead of Outlook, use Google Docs or Windows Live Office. Watch video on YouTube or Vimeo. Even watch TV with Netflix and Hulu. I just found these today! Do 3D modeling with TinkerCad. Lookout now! The killer app announced at Google IO this week Angry Birds online. Are you excited now? Do photo editing online with Picnik. You can create great zooming presentations with Prezi. This and much, much more.

WordPress.com Better Deal

I just moved this blog to Wordpess.com form my Godaddy hosting on WordPress software. WordPress.com is like the Energizer bunny. It keeps going and going with little effort by the user. WordPress.com takes care of the software and the network. You take care of the content. No administrating of the software or the database. Now I just write about hopefully interesting tech stories. The parent company Automattic is doing a great job.

By the way WordPress.com sites are cheap to free. They are free for everyone who doesn’t mind a ****.wordpress.com URL. WordPress charges for other services like a custom URL, more disk space and custom CSS.

Ninite

In the previous post “Tips For A New PC” the Tekzilla boys mentioned “Ninite” a web application that collects all of your favorite free software and roles it up in a nice executable package so you can install all of those apps at once in a single install. You go to the “Ninite” website you check all of the programs you want to install like Firefox, Skype, K-Lite CODECs and many more. You click “Get Installer”. It then downloads an executable file that will automatically install all the apps that you selected. How cool is that?

Google Sync Makes Chrome Shine

I’ve been using Google Chrome for my primary browser for about two weeks and I’ve got to say I’m digging it! The speed is great and it’s very clean but just the past two day days I found where it really shines.

Google Browser Sync extends all of your extensions, bookmarks and settings to all of the Chrome browsers on all of your computers. I was trying a new Linux on my laptop. The default browser for the distro was Chrome (actually the open-source version Chromium). I opened the browser, clicked “customize and control” and Options. I clicked on the “Personal Stuff” tab and “Synchronize”. It ask for a user name and password. I entered them and Wa La the browser is setup just as it is on my desktop.

This and many other features make Chrome my favorite browser for now.

Firefox 4 Beta

I’ve just been checking out the Firefox 4 Beta. I must say I’m pretty impressed! It’s really fast and it is much lighter with the system resources. Firefox 4 Beta does a really good job rendering HTML5 stuff.

As I said, I only just now started using it so I haven’t a clue what it’s capable of so for now, will I be going back to Firefox? It’s hard to say. I only recently moved to Chrome. I will be using Chrome for the near future. I will play with F4 at least while it’s in Beta. It looks promising!

Wave Is Saved

The former project from Google called “Wave” may have been resurrected. The benefactor is the opensouce advocates the “Apache Software Foundation“. Apache is calling it WIAB (Wave In A box). You will be able to install Wave on a server of your own so you and your collaborators can work on projects together via Wave. The project is just in the planning stage now. Here’s the whole proposal.

Edit Video Online

JayCut is a an online video editor. You may ask, “Why would you use an online video editor?” The answer is for power. I have a relatively slow computer. Editing video does not require a powerful machine but rendering the video after editing requires an awful lot of computer (both CPU and RAM). My machine is a single-core AMD Sempron 1.8 GHz with 2 gigs of RAM. Not bad for what I normally use it for (Web Apps, media playback, Photoshop and Lightroom) but it really chokes when rendering video. That’s where JayCut comes in. You upload your video, edit it using there drag and drop interface then render and download to your computer, mobile device or upload it to YouTube. Use Jaycut to do the work.

Of course JayCut is not Finalcut but it is easy, works very well and it’s free!

Beginner’s Podcasting

Seems like everyone is getting in on the podcasting act. Tom and Veronica go over the basics of the tools, services and things you need to do required for any successful podcast.

Watch Video

Podcasting Audio Software. The stuff you need to record, edit and normalize your recorded audio.

Audacity. Great free audio recorder and editor.
Levelator. What you’ll want to use to normalize your podcast’s audio.
Skype. If you need to record a podcast with someone who’s in a different location.
Audio Hijack. Let’s you record audio from multiple sources like Skype. Free to try $32 to keep.
WireTap Studio. Similar in function to Audio Hijack. Free trial and costs $69 to keep.

Uploading/Hosting Service. The location online that will be hosting your podcast.
- Archive.org. Great free hosting service that Tom and Veronica both use.

RSS Feed – Distribution/Syndication. How you’re going to distribute your podcast.

- LibSyn. Combines storage and feed management and cost varies with usage. Also features advanced features like QuickCast and FutureCast.

Tracking Tools. To see how many people are listening/watching your podcast.

Add Site To HTTPS Everywhere

If your using HTTPS Everywhere and you want to add a site that you want to always use HTTS you will have to create an XML file with some simple code in it and save it to the HTTPSEverywhereUserRules/ subdirectory in your Firefox profile directory. This sounds a lot harder then it is.

First open Notepad or a different text editor and paste this code in to it…

  
  

  

Replace the word “twitter.com” with you sites name. Be careful to keep everything else the same like the (\) in (?twitter\.com/). Everything the same except your sites url.

Save the file as “yoursite.xml” without quotes and you’ve made your first XML file.

Copy and paste this file into…

WINDOWS c://program files\Mozilla\Firefox\profiles\HTTPSEverywhereUserRules\. Open that folder and paste “yoursite.xml” in there and close the folder.Open Firefox and go to “Tools”, “Add-ons”, Https Everywhere Preferences. You should see your site listed there.

UBUNTU Go to your name (or Home). Click “Veiw” and “Show Hidden Files”. Open /.mozilla/firefox/p4pcam41/HTTPSEverywhereUserRules/. In in some earlier versions of Firefox it is in /.mozilla/firefox/profiles/HTTPSEverywhereUserRules/.
